The notion of a rugged luxury wagon may seem foreign to many, but it’s the calling card of the new 2018 Volvo V90 Cross Country. With 2.3 inches more ground clearance than the regular wagon, for a total of 8.3 inches, it can take on the trails, deep snow, and pretty much any off-road situation you can throw at it. Differentiated further by its studded grille and roof rails, it drives just as good as it looks.
At least, that’s the takeaway from the team at MotorTrend, who got to sample the V90 Cross Country on Volvo’s home turf in Sweden. Not only did they get to traipse through wooded trails, but even managed to drift it on an icy lake—a feat, given the wagon was equipped with studded tires. Overall, they found the car’s performance plush and responsive, thanks in part to double wishbone suspension and integral rear-link suspension, and four driving modes. Finished by an open-feeling interior with dark walnut open pore wooden trim, heated seats and steering wheel, and Nappa leather, the V90 Cross Country’s cabin is the perfect place to experience whatever nature throws your way.
